The Book makes a modest attempt to throw light on the marginalised protagonists in the major novels of Mulk Raj Anand. A good novel presents interesting and believable human beings in reaction with their environment so as to suggest richly and intensively the universal experience of man. Mulk Raj Anand‟s love of life, his passionate longing for freedom and his keen interest in fighting against social evils portrayed in his novels had an irresistible appeal to me. Anand‟s faith as a writer, his concept of art passes: from a relatively unimportant idealism to Revolutionary Socialism and finally into what Anand calls “comprehensive historical humanism”. The themes which Anand has chosen for his novels are based on such problems as casteism and human suffering caused by a variety of factors – political, economic, social and cultural. Anand‟s humanism makes man “the master of his destiny uncontrolled by God” and he tirelessly attacks in people‟s belief in Karma and Fatalism.
